Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, who is on loan to Spanish side Getafe, is on Atletico Madrid’s summer shortlist as Diego Simeone’s side is aiming to sign a striker.
Greenwood has scored seven goals for Getafe so far and attracted interest from top clubs with Atleti just becoming the latest to enquire about the left-footed forward.
Atletico were in the market during the January transfer window to sign a striker but the deal for Juventus’ Moise Kean collapsed after the Italian failed his medical.
Greenwood joined Getafe on deadline day and despite not playing on the field for over 18 months, the English international made an impressive return and soon became an important player for his current team.
However, despite many great performances in the last seven months, Manchester United showed no intentions of bringing the player back to the club.
Greenwood’s contract with United ends in June 2025 and the most possible outcome is that the 22-year-old will end up joining a top club for some fee.
The 22-year-old has already been linked with FC Barcelona and with Altetico’s growing interest in acquiring his services, it is likely that the English international will be continuing his career in the Spanish league.
It must be noted that United confirmed in August that Greenwood will not be continuing his career with them after a six-and-a-half-month investigation.
Even though the English club gave a clean chit to the player after their investigation, the internal conflict and the backlash from the fans forced the club to part ways with the 22-year-old.
Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape after his then-girlfriend Harriet Robson posted her pictures and an audio file on social media.
The footballer was then immediately suspended from training and matches by the club and last played for The Red Devils against West Ham in January 2022.
Nike suspended and later terminated its sponsorship deal with the player, while Electronic Arts confirmed his removal from active squads on its FIFA 22 game following his arrest.
But in February 2023, charges of attempted rape and assault against Mason Greenwood were dropped by the prosecutor.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material coming to light were factors in their decision to stop the case against the 22-year-old.
